My name is Katie Lowen and I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science at Northeastern University.

Prior to enrolling in this program, I toured internationally as a performing theatre and dance artist. As an artist, I saw firsthand the creative potential in the application of technology in immersive, performative, and entertainment experiences. While I enjoyed performing and touring, I have realized that I want to play an integral role in the development of technological tools that expand the impact of engaging and creative audience experiences. As an artist, I developed a variety of skills necessary for success in the field of Computer Science including the ability to collaborate with my team members, creative problem-solving in high-pressure environments, communicate with artists in varying disciplines, and adapt quickly to current and new demands. In my MSCS program, I have programmed in Python, Java, & C languages. I love to learn new skills and technologies and am adaptable to fast-paced, evolving environments and circumstances. My creative and strategic thinking combine to allow for a different approach to ideation and complex problem-solving challenges. I believe my experience as an artist, in conjunction with the skills I am developing in my MSCS program, will make me a valuable contributor to this industry. My current goal is to find a co-op/internship position that will help me gain experience in this field, specifically in the immersive experiences, game development, and mixed reality fields of this industry as I work toward a full-time career in CS.

Boombox

Co-Founder, Co-Artistic Director

“An alternative 53 feet of performance space”

Boombox is a performance space built in a semi-truck trailer, founded on a desire to create work and have an accessible workplace. Boombox founders Diego Romero, Katie Lowen, and Ileanna Cheladyn set out to create a space where artists had the freedom to engage with the community and present the work they wanted to without restrictions. Boombox is now an established member of the Vancouver Arts Community and a hub for independent performance productions.

After an intense period of renovations, Boombox became a home base for creative processes, providing a safe, private, and alternative environment that doubles as a theatre and rehearsal space. The obscure dimensions of the space (53”x9”x9”) encourage building unconventional site-specific works. After 5 years of operation, Boombox has grown beyond our expectations and has had the opportunity to collaborate with over 50 artists in the Vancouver Arts Community of varying disciplines and generations.
